Stem cells are cells that can asymmetrically divide into a new stem cell and differentiate into another cell types. This capability of stem cell is known as self-renewal, as such, stem cells were widely used in regenerative medicine to repair and replace the damaged cell in human bodies. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are the multipotent cell which is able to differentiate and specialize into the various functional cells such as osteocytes, myocytes, chondrocytes, and adipocytes.

MSC therapies hold great potential as an “off-the-shelf” therapeutic product in regenerative medicine and autoimmune disease based on their differentiation ability and immunosuppressive properties. This is because MSCs express less MHC class II protein which makes MSC a potential candidate for “off-the-shelf” cell therapy product and causes a less immune response in the recipient. Furthermore, MSCs secrete various cytokines and growth factors that provide the paracrine effect to stimulate the regeneration of damaged tissue.
